Del cane di don Emilio Messana scrisse venticinque anni fa Giulio Nascimbeni sul Corriere della Sera nell’articolo per la morte di Leonardo Sciascia. Di questo cane, che dormiva acciambellato davanti alla farmacia di Racalmuto abitualmente frequentata dal suo padrone, Sciascia parla in Occhio di capra. Per ricordare, cristallizzare momenti della vita del suo paese e dei suoi galantuomini. La farmacia era allora luogo di ritrovo e di discussione anche in altri paesi della Sicilia. Lu cani di don Miliu attendeva dormendo il suo padrone. Ed era ormai, questa del cane nel sonno acciambellato davanti alla farmacia, un’immagine di tutti i giorni che durò per anni fissandosi negli occhi della gente. Al punto che quando il cane morì, davanti alla farmacia e nella sua posizione di sempre, nessuno se n’accorse. Forse allo stesso modo – scrisse Nascimbeni – a Leonardo sarebbe piaciuto andarsene dal mondo: improvvisamente nel sonno e in silenzio, senza dar fastidi. E come “i vecchi spesso sperano” secondo le sue stesse parole.
